This focuses primarily on the selection of literary works and how to teach them by making good use of a novel in the Korean language classroom. The literary education has been repeatedly required. However, the research success achieved so far shows that literature has been used only to teach the Korean language and culture. It is a text of a novel that is a representative teaching material. Since a novel presents more detailed contexts in which languages are used in comparison with a poem, an , or a drama, it is true that it includes many factors that can be exploited in terms of teaching language and culture.
However, the literary education by using a novel actually aims at improving functional communicative competence such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing, not at developing practical communicative competence and literary ability: consequently, it's hard to differentiate between general communicative language teaching and that of using a fictional text. In other words, the contents and methods of the literary education in teaching the Korean language has not been systemized yet.
To design systematic literary teaching class, the use of a novel, a fictional text, is recommended in that it can show a variety of language use, abundant actual contexts, and language communication structure. In addition, The complexity in its story development and the language communication structure through the process of understanding the novel helps learners have a good grasp of language forms. For these reasons, this suggested the contents and methods of literary education for successful Korean language teaching.
To look for such contents and methods, first of all, it is urgent to identify how students accept a novel and what they need and then to select a fictional text for classroom use. Accordingly, the objects of this study were Korean language learners at high levels.
Korean language learners were identified as preferring a short novel rather than a full-length one; this is because the latter would make the burden too heavy for them on account of the length. In consideration of the condition of teaching Korean as a foreign language, to use a short novel is advisable: accordingly, this chose “Sonagi” written by Hwang sun-won as a text. This novel has already been included in many domestic Korean texts, and also a survey indicated the novel is what the most draws students' interest.
This analyzed a novel in terms of three layers such as language, structure, and theme; accordingly, different educational contents and teaching methods for each layer were suggested. A theme of a novel is presented through its linguistic and structural factors. Generally, three components of a novel are said to be theme, plot, and style, and story structure includes characters, story, and a setting: Lazar suggested three different views of a literature such as linguistic approach, literature as a content, and literature for personal abundance. With reference to these perspectives, a fictional text can be analyzed into three layers: the linguistic, the structural, and the thematic, layer.
Likewise, the contents of literary education for the Korean language learners depend on the three layers of a novel and then detailed teaching methods are determined. First, in terms of the linguistic layer, vocabulary, sentence patterns, and discourse were selected as the educational contents. Second, the contents in terms of the structural layer are background, characters, plot, tone, atmosphere, and a point of view. Third, in the thematic layer, to grasp the point was selected.
In this , the Korean literary education to integrate language, structure, and theme by using a novel are believed to enable Korean language learners to improve their practical communicative competence and literary ability. Therefore, this suggested the contents of the Korean literary education by using a novel according to the three layers and even how to teach them.
