As Korea has attracted a great deal of interest from the world, foreigners who want to learn Korean language have increased. And the learners who want to learn it scientifically among them has done, too. Communication approach (teaching) has been widely used for learning daily conversation in the Korean language education for a while. But now, differentiated language skills should be taught and learned for the learners who have an academic purpose about Korean language in an advanced language course. Accordingly, it is necessary for differentiated education in four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as a syllabus in an advanced course.
It is not able to evaluate that only one skill among reading, speaking, writing and listening is the most important. However, the most basic skill for learner of an advanced language course is reading. The reason why is because it needs a reading skill prior to speaking and a reading skill is essential for writing.
Thus, this research selected a reading skill among several linguistic skills. In Chapter I, firstly the details of reading education (exercise) which have been studied in the advanced Korean language education, then the purpose and necessity of this research were checked and the contents and methods were suggested. In Chapter II, the theoretical background of this research was understood. This research checked again the definition of reading, examined ‘Pre-reading activities' and ’Post-reading activities' developed by Jensen, explained the text type of reading by dividing it into ‘narrative text' and ’expository text' and compared them each other. And,' a type of reading task' which is able to be regarded as one of 'Post-reading activities' was examined, too.
In Chapter III, the Korean language textbooks for an advanced course were analyzed. Most of Korean language textbooks are integrated textbooks. So, this research compared the type of reading texts suggested in a textbook and how to use the texts centering around 'reading activities of advanced Korean language learners' among the existing textbooks and then found out the related problems. In Chapter Ⅳ, and, it by selected the learning topics that an expository text is organically connected with a narrative text after supplementing Chapter III and then suggested both an active task and a passive task to the advanced learner and a proper reading textbook to be helpful for active reading comprehension to an advanced learner. But still, it is inconvenient that this research could not make a test for the actual advanced Korean language learners and just analyzed only a text. Also, this research could not suggest lots of lessons making use of a reading function. Therefore, Korean reading textbooks and the related tasks should be studied more and more in future.
