The purpose of this study is to investigate academic and everyday life-related the information needs and information seeking behavior of international students. As a first indicator for this purpose, researcher categorize the contents of the information needs and then survey to find out what is the most needed information among the information needs, the strength of each of the information needs were compared. As a second indicator is the information seeking. Detailed sub-elements are activity level of information seeking, whether or not satisfied with information seeking, and barriers of information seeking. As a third indicator is information source. Detailed sub-elements are preferred information source and degrees of decision about usability. Another objective of this study is to obtain whether or not there are significant differences information seeking behavior depending on demographic characteristics for example, nationality, ages, gender, degree process, major, korea residence period, korean language proficiency, marital status and whether or not accompanied by family and affective aspects for example, alienation and self-esteem. Additionally this study made a survey for researching their overall use behavior CNU library focus on frequency of visits.
The data was collected through a survey with graduate course at Chonnam National University Gwangju Campus, and analyzed for frequency test, Chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, independent-samples t-test, correlation analysis or multiple regression analysis using SPSS Statistics 17.0.
The results of this study are as follows;
1) International students demand mostly Academic-related information. Then comes Self-development information, Economic life information, Social and cultural life information, and Health information in that order.
2) The strength of academic-related information needs average is 2.68 and the strength of everyday life-related information needs average is 2.79. The result shows that the latter is higher than the former but indicates that international students have low information needs overall. The highest strength of academic-related information needs is library use(2.92) and the highest strength of everyday life-related information needs is a part-time job(2.99).
3) In terms of positiveness, international students are more actively academic-related information seeking than everyday life-related information seeking.
4) In both academic and everyday life-related the information seeking, the major obstacle chosen most frequently by international students is that they don't know how to get information, and then the lack of services offered in English in that order.
5) 70.1% of international students are satisfied with academic-related information seeking and 68.7% of international students are satisfied with everyday life-related information seeking. Also the result shows whether or not satisfied with information seeking academic and everyday life-related is statistically significant relationship.
6) Preferred information sources for both academic and everyday life-related are informal information sources such as professors, assistants, friends, and colleagues and then internet in that order.
7) Both-all academic and everyday life-related, degrees of decision about usability of informal information sources such as professors, assistants, friends, colleagues, and families are the highest and then internet in that order. In other words, informal information sources are useful as well as preferred.
8) In connection with indicators of information seeking behaviors in all aspects; information needs, information seeking, and information sources, variable showing significant difference is korean language proficiency.
9) The results of correlation analysis, the variables which is associated with frequency of library visits are degrees of decision usability about CNU library resources, degrees of decision usability about librarian, the strength of information needs such as course registration, understanding classes, writing a , career counseling, and foreign language skills improvement, the number of library services which they know, and frequency of use library homepage such as Borrowing/Returning inquiry, Search the library list , Off-campus access services and Interlibrary loan. The results of correlation analysis for variables, the frequency of library visits is greatly influenced by Borrowing/returning inquiry.
