이 연구는 『표준국어대사전』에 나온 상징어를 연구 대상으로 삼아 상징어의 다양한 쓰임과 문법적 특성을 살펴봄으로써 국어학의 연구 결과를 한국어 교육현장에 활용할 수 있는 자료로 삼고자 하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
1장에서는 『표준국어대사전』에 나온 전체 표제어를 대상으로 상징어의 범주를 나누어 자료를 다양하게 비교분석하였다.
2장에서는 상징어의 개념을 살펴보고 『표준국어대사전』에 제시된 상징어를 범주에 따라 분류하였다.
3장에서는 용언형성 접미사의 결합정보와 부사형성 접미사 결합정보, 본말과 준말의 관계에 대하여 분석해보았다.
4장에서는 『표준국어대사전』에 제시된 정보를 기초로 하여 동형어와 다의어의 구분 기준을 설정하였다. 또한 『표준국어대사전』에 나온 잘못 쓰이는 상징어와 북한의 상징어를 조사해봄으로써 이러한 상징어들의 쓰임에 대해서도 살펴보았다.
5장에서는 한국어 교육에서의 상징어의 활용 방안을 모색해보고 이들의 교육 모형을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to make the material for applying the research result of Korean linguistics to Korean education by targeting symbolic words from 『Dictionary of Standard Korean』 and looking into their various usage and grammatic feature.
Symbolic word, playing a key role in expressing the speaker's feelings and emotion, has merits of representing colorful verbal tastes.
For foreign people without intuition to Korean, it is quite difficult for them to apply Korean usage since one symbolic word can represent diverse verbal tastes by changing consonants or vowels. Therefore, this sort of study is essential for Korean education.
In chapter 1, the necessity, purpose, and method of this study are arranged. The research has been done in the way of categorizing and executing various comparative analysis on headwords from『Dictionary of Standard Korean』.
In chapter 2, I searched for the concept of symbolic word and classified the symbolic words from 『Dictionary of Standard Korean』 in accordance with their category.
In chapter 3, I researched morphologic feature with analysis on combining information of suffix making declinable word, suffix making adverb, and the relationship between original and contraction word.
In chapter 4, on the basis of the information presented in 『Dictionary of Standard Korean』, established the differentiation standard of homonym and polysemous word. Also, by researching symbolic words from 『Dictionary of Standard Korean』 in wrong usage and North Korean symbolic words, I reexamined their application.
In chapter 5, I tried to find the plan for application of symbolic words to Korean education and suggested the its education model.
