The purpose of this research is how to teach for foreign students Korean synonyms by using a situation comedy. This study attempts to reveal the authentic way of teaching Korean synonyms in a real class by classifying synonyms.
When students study a foreign language as a second language, they are eager to speak a foreign language fluently using a right expression in a right situation and comprehend every single detail after studying the basics of the structure of the language : grammar and vocabulary. Especially more when they step up the levels. The higher their levels are, the more accurately and fluently they want to speak. When students are able to use precise synonyms in an appropriate situation, they have a good command of language. Considering, the importance of the use of synonyms in the process of second language acquisition.
Consequently, in this study I explored how to use an authentic material, sitcom, in a real class in order to motivate students to study a language further.
In Chapter 1, this study reviewed the previous researches which were done in teaching synonyms through sitcoms. Despite these constant researches on this topic, it will not be easy for language learners to distinguish a variety of synonyms on many different basis. Explaining details about synonyms can make students confused. Therefore the present writer took great pains to think what could be the best way to teach synonyms, then considered a sitcom as a best method of teaching synonyms. There are not any researches yet that integrate teaching synonyms with sitcom media in teaching Korean as a foreign language.
There are opposite test method, arrange test method, grammar system test method, substitution test method and componential analysis method. In this study tested 4 test methods apart form grammar system test method. The above ways which were testified are targeted for Korean teacher. When teachers understand the main differences of synonyms, they will be explained to students. We can take an example of ‘originally’ and ‘primarily’ in this chapter. This methodology can lead to testify the difference of meanings of synonyms.
Chapter 3 deals with how to use sitcoms in teaching Korean by using the methods presented in chapter 2. The synonyms are divided into 4 different categories : Noun, Verb, Adjective and Adverb, which presented the practical teaching method in a real class are able to teach them easily. By stimulating the students with the presentation of synonyms used in sitcoms, in this process teachers who acquired the methods can solve a variety of questions which they will face in class.
It is a very difficult task to classify and generalize a lot of synonyms, so that they can be used in an authentic situation; However, the above mentioned methodology can lead to further studies on this matter. In addition, we showed continue researching a better way to help students enhance the use of synonyms by providing more clear and available methods.
