Recently many universities have the departments of Korean language education, many experts are being produced from those universities, and academic societies are conducting a lot of studies on Korean language education although it has not been a long time since it was established as an academic field. In addition, various kinds of dictionaries and grammar books for Korean language education are being published, which enhance the status of Korean language education.
The purposes of the current study are to define the meaning of function of a grammatical factor with respect to 'supposition, will' among grammatical factors of the elementary level for Korean language grammar education as a foreign language, and to suggest effective methods and activities for communication that can be used in grammar classes.
For this, the introduction examined the necessity and the purposes of the study, and prior studies, and explained a survey and research method required for the study.
Chapter 2 introduced a grammatical expression regarding 'supposition, will' in Korean language grammar education, explained differences in Korean language grammar education between Korean people and foreigners in <Table 1>, and analyzed grammars with respect to 'supposition, will' in elementary Korean language textbooks of various universities. As a result, it was found that the concept and classification systems of the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will' vary among scholars. In particular, it was observed that classification systems and the meaning of 'supposition, will' were not unified in the elementary Korean language textbooks. Accordingly, the current study suggested that the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will' should be taught separately in the elementary level, and then, the fact that one grammatical factor contains various meanings should be taught after the elementary level.
Chapter 3 examined usage of the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will' among foreigner Korean learners by making a questionnaire sheet on the basis of the results analyzed. Characteristics of their usage were described in <Table 9>. As a result, it was found that students used '- (eu)l geoyeyo' of 'supposition' the most among the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will', and they use grammatical factors with similar meaning or usage evenly.
The study also analyzed actual errors focusing on the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will' with high frequency of use.
The learners presented the most replacement errors in '- (eu)l geoyeyo' and '- (eu)l geot gatayo' among grammatical factors having meaning of 'supposition', and in '- (eu)ryeogo haeyo' and '- giro haeyo' among grammatical factors having meaning of 'will'. Also they presented the most replacement errors in '- get' and '- (eu)l geotida' among grammatical factors having both meanings of 'supposition, will'. The study examined how to reduce errors and restriction of meanings and usage on the basis of the above results.
Lastly, the study suggested an efficient Korean language grammar teaching model and actual lesson models for the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will' at the elementary level on the basis of the results of the questionnaire. For the actual lesson models were suggested using the most frequency of use in the questionnaire such as '- (eu)l geoyeyo' for 'supposition', '- giro haeyo' for 'will' and '- get' grammatical factors having both meanings of 'supposition, will'.
The study aimed to help foreigner Korean learners learn Korean grammar by suggesting effective learning methods because explanation about the grammatical factor regarding 'supposition, will' in the elementary textbooks for Korean language education cause confusion among Korean language learners since they are different each other while being similar in meaning and function. However, the number of the subjects for the usage and error research was small and there were no various language backgrounds of the subjects. Therefore, it is expected to get better findings if an in-depth study is conducted with more materials.
