Reduplication is a common language feature which can be frequently seen in any language in the world. The reduplication of language unit can be categorized according to the different benchmarks; it can be classified into syllable reduplication, morpheme reduplication, word reduplication, and phrase reduplication by the category of reduplicated language unit; According to the reduplication of language units whether is meaningful, it can be classified meaningful units reduplication and meaningless units’reduplication. Words can be classified into simple words and composite words in accordance with their constitution. Compared to the normal composite words, the compound words in reduplication structure has not only obvious morphological characteristics but also stress, plural, repeatance, etc.
Korea and China adjoin each other in the East Asia circle and have developed cultures by influencing one another in the circle of Chinese characters. Although Korean and Chinese belong to different language families, they have quite many similarities in phonology, grammar, vocabulary. This study intends to reveal the similarities and differences in reduplicated words' morphological and meaning features in Korean and Chinese languages as well as the causes of the word formation through the comparison of form and meaning of Korean and Chinese language. This study will be useful information for Korean and Chinese superposition language education for foreigners in the future.
This study is mainly about reduplicated words composed of independent words or duplicated etymological roots in Chinese and Korean vocabulary. Based on the all the reduplicated words in『Yonsei Korean Dictionary』 and 『Modern Chinese Dictionary』, this study compared the morphological and meaning features of reduplicated words in Korean and Chinese languages.
There are four sections in this thesis. Section 1 introduces the purpose of this study, research subjects, research methods, and summarization of some related research contents.
In section 2, the reduplicated Korean and Chinese words are classified into three categories for comparison based on morphological features that are‘whole reduplicated word' form from the whole of the basic superposing form,‘part reduplicated word' form from part of the basic superposing form, and ‘affix interposition reduplicated word' form by inserting the affix to the basic superposing form. Moreover, the investigation of the morphological types of reduplicated words in Korean and Chinese reveals the similarities and differences in morphological features of reduplicated words in Korean and Chinese and the cause of the word formation.
In section 3, through the comparison of the meaning and the meaning of the basic forms of the reduplicated words, Korean reduplicated words mean four kinds of meaning features, such as emphasis, plural, repeatance and continuance, state and the diversity of movements while Chinese reduplicated words mean five kinds of meaning features like emphasis, plural, repeatance and continuance, instantaneity, attempt. Through the contrast of the meaning feature of the reduplicated Korean and Chinese words, section 3 shows the similarities and differences in reduplicated words' meaning features in Korean and Chinese languages.
The last section is conclusion. It summarizes the redupilicated words' morphological and meaning features of Korean and Chinese languages and illustrates the conclusions of the comparison.
