The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of teaching pronunciation in promoting listening competence of the learners who learn Korean as a foreign language.
For this purpose, an experiment was conducted for four weeks. There were two groups of the learners who are Chinese at the beginning level. The students in the experimental group were taught the nasalization of Korean systematically while those of the controlled group were not.
After a 3-week-period instruction, the analysis of the data from two types of listening comprehension tests and a survey showed the following results.
(1) The experimental group showed higher scores in the listening test for the nasalization .
(2) The experimental group also attained higher scores in overall listening comprehension test.
(3) The experimental group demonstrated a slight improvement in the attitude to Korean learning, interest in Korean pronunciation and so on.
The findings in this study have supported the fact that the Korean listening ability can be enhanced with the help of teaching Korean pronunciation. In teaching Korean, pronunciation should be taught systematically. Also, teachers need to make students aware of the importance of pronunciation and let them take part in their own learning pronunciation. At the same time, the Korean textbooks should contain learning materials on Korean pronunciation that can improve learners' pronunciation and listening competence.
