The purpose of this study is to investigate the situation regarding the use of foreign languages-among the languages used in Korean popular songs-and to examine the causes behind the abuse of foreign languages as well as methods for increasing the use of Korean.
In this study, the popular songs which ranked within top 10 every month for the last 2 years (2006 ~ 2007) were set as study materials. To examine the preference levels for languages used in popular songs, a survey was conducted to 500 people ranging from teens to those over 50s. Also, interviews were performed in order to study the language preferences of music agents, manufacturer representatives, and lyricists and the reason behind their preference of certain languages.
Foreign words and sentences were respectively used much more frequently than Korean with Korean word 13.95%, Korean sentences 16.45%, foreign words 78.68%, and foreign sentences 83.55% appearing in the music titles of popular songs. Foreign words and sentences appeared more in singers’ names with Korean word 34.12%, Korean sentences 44.22%, foreign words 65.86%, and foreign sentences 55.68%. However, Korean words and sentences were used more frequently than foreign languages in representative songs with Korean word 60.66%, Korean sentences 61.90%, foreign words 39.33%, and foreign sentences 38.10%. Also in lyrics, the rate of Korean words used were examined to be higher than the rate of foreign languages with the rate of Korean word usage 67.82% and rate of foreign language usage 32.18%. With the rate of sentences composed completely in Koreans 61.13%, completely in foreign languages 27.21%, and a mix of Korean and foreign languages 11.66%; sentences composed completely in Korean had the highest percentage. However, this phenomenon should be taken as a serious problem since the situation in which the rate of foreign words at 32.18% and sentences composed only with foreign languages at 27.21% in Korean popular songs is not a small percentage.
Among consumers, age groups who had positive responses towards using foreign words or sentences in popular songs were the teenagers with 77.27%, 20s with 69.81%, 30s with 56.38%, 40s with 37.75%, and 50s with 20.66% showing the highest positive response in teenagers.
The teenagers take 70% of gravity in domestic record consumers. Through interviews, it is found that music agents, manufacturer representatives, and lyricists could not help but use foreign languages in popular songs to fulfill the desires of teenagers who prefer foreign languages.
Government authorities should work towards a movement for the use of Korean by establishing a translation committee in the National Institute of Korean Language to translate foreign languages into Korean while forbidding the selling or broadcasting of popular songs with foreign languages by strengthening broadcast deliberations and reviving systems of pre-deliberat ion of records.
Also, mass media must restrain the use of foreign languages, habitually use Korean as a good example, and constantly unfold the Korean Language Usage Movement.
Additionally, elementary, middle, and high schools should educate their students to have a mindset of loving Korean while thoroughly conducting education on favoritism for the use of the Korean language.
