The purpose of this thesis is to see how linguistic rhythm in English is reflected in words in pop songs. To do this, I first reviewed the rhythmic pattern of English which is realized as a stress pattern like strong-weak alternation. English is a stress-timed language and stressed syllable is pronounced longer, louder and with a higher pitch. In music this means the stressed syllable is supposed to have longer beat and higher tone. I have checked ten pop songs to compare the relation of linguistic rhythm and that in music and showed there is a very close relationship between the two. Chapter 1 is the introduction of the thesis, which includes the purpose, significance and the content of the thesis. Chapter 2 deals with the English stress. The stress is located in one syllable of a word and the stressed syllable sounds louder, longer, and higher than others. So, stressed strong sounds and unstressed weak sounds make the rhythm of English. This chapter also provides the concept of the syllable, which is the unit of the stress, the structure of the syllable, and the vowel. Chapter 3 provides the word stress rule and sentence stress rule. In this chapter, I explain the two kinds of word stress rules. One is the rule by a part of speech, noun and verb, and the other is the rule by the ending of the words. In sentence stress rule, there are content words and function words in a sentence, and the stress goes on the content words. Furthermore, in English, a primary sentence stress goes on the last word. However, in many cases, there are many exceptions. The stress can be located in function words in case the words make a contrast with other words and the words contain new information. Moreover, in case a speaker need to emphasis the words, it can be also possible. Chapter 4 describes the connection between the rhythm in English and rhythm in Music. In the Music, there are three factors, the beat in a phrase, length of a musical note, and the pitch of a tone. Those factors exactly correspond with the factors in English stress. So, I examine how rhythm of polysyllabic words and sentences are represented in pop songs. Chapter 5 summarizes all chapters and concludes that the rhythm in English is made by the stress and the rhythm is closely connected with the rhythm in Music. Finally, this thesis suggests that pop songs must be helpful to understand the rhythm in English. Koreans have a little difficulty to understand the rhythm, so I hope that this thesis helps people better understand rhythm in English.
영어는 한국어와는 다르게 강세에 의해서 말하기가 결정되는 강세박자언어이다. 그리고, 이러한 강세에 의해서 영어는 한국어와는 다른 말하기의 리듬을 형성하게 되고, 이 리듬 때문에 한... 영어는 한국어와는 다르게 강세에 의해서 말하기가 결정되는 강세박자언어이다. 그리고, 이러한 강세에 의해서 영어는 한국어와는 다른 말하기의 리듬을 형성하게 되고, 이 리듬 때문에 한국어를 모국어로 갖는 한국인들이 영어를 배우는 데에 있어서 큰 어려움을 겪게 된다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 영어의 리듬을 좀 더 쉽게 이해하기 위해서 영어의 강세에 대해서 자세하게 살펴보고, 영어의 리듬을 음악의 리듬을 통해서 알아보고자 팝송을 통해서 나타나는 영어의 리듬을 분석하였다. 단어의 강세에 대해서 알아보면서, 단어강세의 규칙 중 품사에 따른 단어강세규칙과 스펠링에 따른 단어강세규칙에 대해서 알아보았고, 이와 함께 문장 내에서 강세가 주어지는 문장강세규칙에 대해서 알아보았다. 문장강세규칙은 문장 내에서 의미상에 중요한 역할을 하는 내용어에는 강세를 주고, 문법상으로 존재하는 기능어에는 강세를 주지 않는 것이다. 그런데, 여기에서 문장 내에서 대조를 이루거나 혹은 화자가 강조하고 싶은 경우에는 기능어일 경우에도 강세가 주어지게 된다. 영어에서 강세를 받는 다는 것은 강세를 받지 않는 다른 음절에 비해서 더 크고, 더 길고, 더 높게 소리가 나는 것을 말한다. 따라서, 이러한 두드러지는 강세의 특성에 의해서 강세를 받는 곳은 강하게 강세를 받지 않는 곳은 약하게 발음 하는 것으로 영어는 강약의 리듬을 형성하게 된다. 그리고, 이 강세의 특징은 음악에서 나타나는 마디 내의 강약의 박자와 음의 길이, 음의 높이를 통해서 표현이 가능하였다. 음악의 리듬을 통해서 영어의 리듬을 알아보고자 본 논문에서는 팝송을 분석하였는데, 우선 단어 강세의 현상을 알아보기 위해 영어의 2음절 단어 – better, forget – 와 3음절 단어 –memory, remember, understand – 의 강세에 의한 리듬이 팝송에서 어떻게 표현되는가를 알아보았다. 이 과정에서 각각의 단어들을 가사에 포함하고 있는 팝송 10곡을 선정하여 분석해 본 결과, 각각 예시로 제시한 다섯 개의 단어의 강세 현상은 정확하게 음악적 리듬으로 매우 잘 표현되고 있었고, 선정된 10곡에서 나타난 모은 다음절어의 강세 현상을 분석해 본 결과 98%에 달하는 확률로 정확하게 잘 표현이 되고 있었다. 문장 강세의 경우에는 단어 강세현상을 알아보기 위해서 선정되었던 10곡에서 따온 문장에서 내용어와 기능어를 분리하여 분석해 본 결과 음악의 리듬 때문에 강세가 주어지지 않는 곳에서 강세가 주어지는 경우도 있었고, 본 논문에서 단어 강세의 현상을 알아보기 위해서 선정한 10곡만을 분석하였고, 또한 선정된 곡들이 대부분 발라드 풍의 곡이라는 점에서 좀 더 다양한 팝송을 분석할 필요성이 있어 보이지만, 대부분의 경우 문장강세에 의한 영어의 리듬을 잘 표현해 주고 있었다. 본 논문의 목적은 팝송을 통해서 영어의 리듬을 좀 더 쉽게 접근해 보고자 함이며, 본 연구가 영어의 강세에 의한 영어의 리듬을 이해하는데 도움이 되었으면 하는 바이다 ，韩语论文，韩语论文范文 |
