이 논문은 한국어를 배우는 외국인 학습자로 하여금 효과적인 방법으로 어휘를 학습하고 학습한 후 오랫동안 기억하게 하여 의사소통뿐만 아니라 읽기·쓰기 등에 적절하게 활용하도록 하는 데 목적이 있다.
이것은 학습자가 효과적으로 어휘 학습을 하는 방법을 찾아 쉽고 재미있게 어휘를 학습하고 학습 후에도 오랫동안 지속하게 하는 것이다.
우선 어휘 학습에 필요한 이론적 배경이 되는 어휘교수법 이론에서의 어휘지도와 어휘를 접근하는 데 있어서의 방법론적 해법을 찾아보았다. 또한 한국어의 어휘 특징과 어휘 교육 방법에 대한 과거의 연구를 토대로 의미관계에 따른 어휘의 연관성에 의한 어휘 학습의 필요성을 제시했다.
다음으로 효과적인 어휘 학습 방법을 찾기 위해 학습자들에게 수업시간에 선생님이 자주 사용하는 어휘 지도 방법과, 선생님의 어휘 교육 방법 중 학습자가 가장 이해하기 쉬운 방법, 그리고 어휘 습득 후 가장 오랫동안 기억에 남는 어휘 지도 방법에 대해 설문조사를 해 보았다. 그 결과 전체적으로 학습자들이 가장 선호하는 어휘 학습 방법은 어휘 사이에 의미관계가 있는 유의어, 반의어, 그리고 다의어와 같은 어휘 특징에 따른 어휘 학습을 하는 방법으로 나타났다.
이러한 결과를 바탕으로 의미관계에 따른 어휘 관계를 중점적으로 고찰하고 그 특징들을 알아보았다. 유의어, 반의어, 다의어의 개념과 그 특징을 살펴본 후 그 분석을 통해 각각의 유형에 다른 지도요령을 마련했으며, 유의어를 통한 어휘 학습 모형, 반의어를 통한 어휘 학습 모형, 그리고 다의어를 통한 어휘 학습 모형을 제시했다.
이 논문은 비록 초급 수준을 대상으로만 유의어와 반의어에 대한 평가 문제를 만들어 그 결과를 확인해 보았지만, 이 평가를 통해 논문의 주제에 맞는 결과를 확인해 냈다는 데에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

This thesis has the aim of seeking which method foreign students use to learn Korean language vocabulary most effectively, how they store it in long term memory after learning it, and how they apply it appropriately for communicative competence in both listening and speaking. In other words it seeks the method by which students study vocabulary easily, interestingly, and effectively; and how they can remember over the long term the vocabulary that they've studied.
At first, it tried to search for a vocabulary instruction method within the theory of vocabulary teaching method where theoretical background is necessary for vocabulary learning. It also presented the necessity of vocabulary learning by the meaning relation on the basis of preceeding research on the characteristic of Korean vocabulary and the vocabulary teaching method.
Next, in order to find an effective method of vocabulary learning, it investigated the method a teacher frequently used when teaching vocabulary to the students in the class, the easiest method the students found among the teacher's vocabulary teaching methods, and the vocabulary teaching method where recall remained high for the longest time after vocabulary learning took place. The best result appeared when the vocabulary learning method that students prefer most is the very method used to apply a related meaning among two given words or those such as synonyms, antonyms, and words with multiple meanings.
Based on this result, it studies vocabulary relation and its characteristics in meaning relation. It also presents each instructional method through analyses after trying to delve into the concepts and characteristics of synonyms, antonyms, and words with multiple meanings. (The vocabulary learning model by synonyms, the vocabulary learning model by antonyms, and the vocabulary learning model by words with multiple meanings.)
The subject of the thesis was confirmed through evaluation, even though it only evaluated the synonyms and antonyms by testing basic level students.
