It is important to note that pronunciation plays a vital role in the context of foreign language education. Pronouncing in the wrong way from the beginning can be a difficult habit to correct even after progressing into the advanced level of the education. So the importance of recognizing pronunciation errors from students and correcting them cannot be stressed out enough.
Recognizing the exact differentiation of vowel and consonant also plays a key role in pronunciation. To be able to achieve this ability, one should learn how phonological process works in the language. Day-to-day human languages are spoken with not as individual pronunciation but with continuation of sound. Having said this, there are number of restrictions in this continuity. phonological process is a crucial skill required to overcome these restrictions and without this ability, it is impossible to communicate normally with others.
These phonological process has different characteristics in different languages. This will result in language interference between students native language and their second language they aim to learn. To avoid these discrepancies and confusions, investigating the difference of both languages’ phonological process is essential. In this context, the objective was to research and plan a scheme in how to educate consonantal assimilation of Korean.
Another important fact to mention here is that there are two possible ways of consonantal assimilation of Korean. Especially, there is distinct characteristic about place assimilation. It shows considerable difference between fast phonation and slow phonation. The standard pronunciation of Korean does not acknowledge place assimilation but it is widely and freely used in day-to-day basis. In the context of this , we recognize that it is one of the important methods of communicating well with others and decided to acknowledge place assimilation as part of consonantal assimilation education.
As part of preliminary study to come up with detailed educational scheme, we researched and analyzed errors of Korean consonantal assimilation and pronunciation from native Chinese. Through analyzing these errors, it was possible to point out clear evidence of necessity of consonantal assimilation education and furthermore, formulating and setting the objective and basis of these education.
In this , the importance of educating consonantal assimilation of Korean was discussed, a comparison consonantal assimilation of Korean and Chinese was made in the context of phonological patterns, and lastly, the educational scheme consonantal assimilation of Korean is suggested.
