Abstract: After attacking and occupying Vietnam in 1858, French colonists began to implement the policies of westernization and de-sinicization in Vietnam in view of the long-term influence of Chinese cul-ture in Vietnam. These policies included setting up new schools which mainly teach new Vietnamese and French, transforming the content of school courses and imperial examination. On one hand, the poetry and prose examination were cancelled and the test questions about the Confucian classics and Chinese history were reduced; on the other hand, the courses about new Vietnamese, French and Western technology were increased, and the standard of paper marking were also altered. In 1919, imperial examination in Vietnam, which had been set up for more than 800 years, was eventually abolished. After being independent, the Vietnam government continued to put into practice the de-sinicization policy, which led to the continuous weakening of Chinese character and Chinese culture in Vietnam. |
