Abstract:Charles Dickens is one of the most distinguished representatives of realistic literature in the 19th century. Great Expectations is one of his mature works written in Dickens’s later years. The character Miss Havisham is one of the most complicated and vivid creations in his works. By describing the character Miss Havisham from the perspective of archetype in Carl Jung’s analytical psychology, this paper shows the contradictions and conflicts of the capitalist society in Victorian Age. Through the analyses of personal and social factors, this paper reveals Miss Havisham’s tragic fate and the inferior social position of women in the Victorian society.

Key words: Jung; archetype; tragic fate

Great Expectations is Dickens’s mature work in his later years. Miss Havisham was a tragic character in the man-dominated society. She was unable to resist oppression from the society. Then the pressures of society lead to distortion of her personality. Her life was destroyed by a single tragic event: she was abandoned by Compeyson on their wedding day. Since then, she lost the belief of life. She alienated herself from the Victorian society as she lived in the shadow of desertion in the rest of her life.

By describing the character Miss Havisham from the perspective of archetype in Jung’s psychology, this paper reveals Miss Havisham’s tragic fate and the infeiority of women in the Victorian society. Miss Havisham’s tragedy assumes universal significance for its social criticism and she is a character worthy of our sympathy.
