Edna’s selection of death leads us to a serious thought about the destiny of female existence. Edna belongs to the 19th century. Throughout the whole female history, complete success is impossible, because their goals are not established. At that time, women can not do what they want to do, and they are expected to be the ideal type of womanhood as an understanding wife and loving mother. Marriage is the whole life for every female. They must sacrifice their own happiness to take care of their husband and children.
