Abstract: This thesis explores the similarities and differences between the Byronic Hero and the Hemingway’s Hero. Both of them are called individualistic heroes who cater to the western value system of pursuing self-fulfillments and such heroes are doomed to have the tragic endings for their strong sense of loneliness. At the same time, they hold different attitudes toward female which reflect women’s position at that time and different themes are reflected from them as well: the Byronic hero fights for national destination while the Hemingway’s hero is more focused on individual freedom. To further the study, the two authors’ personal experiences as well as their social background are researched in detail so to find out the reasons that cause the difference and similarities between their heroes. At last, it is concluded that history creates heroes.

摘要：本文旨在研究拜伦式英雄和海明威式英雄的异同点。这两种人物均被称为个人主义英雄，所体现的是西方追求自我实现的价值观。而这两种英雄身上所具有的弱点，如强烈的孤独感也注定了他们失败的结局。同时海明威式英雄与拜伦式英雄在对待女性看法上的区别，也反映了当时背景下的女性地位。而从两者主题的不同之处上看，我们发现拜伦式英雄是为整个国家命运而战，然而海明威式英雄更多的是为自己的自由去奋斗。进一步深入探究我们的课题，会发现这两类英雄的异同点是和作者的生平经历和时代大背景都息息相关的，可以说是时势造英雄。
