Abstract:Robert Frost is one of the most distinguished poets in America, who won Pulitz Prize four times during his life time. He occupies an important position not only in American literature, but also in world literature. Many of his poems are about New England country life, expatiating the inharmonious relationship between man and nature, and between man and man. The theme of loneliness can often be found in Frost's poetry, playing an important role. This is not only related to the society at that time but Frost’s bitter life in reality. Through an analysis of this theme in Frost's poems in North of Boston, readers can get a better understanding of his poetry, and what’s more, be triggered to rethink and reevaluate our modern life.

This paper falls into three parts: the first one deals with the loneliness caused by the barrier and inharmonious relationships in human reality. The second part illustrates loneliness resulted from conflicts between dream and reality. The last one explores loneliness manifested in the relationships between man and nature.

In summary, after a further and detailed study of the theme of loneliness in Robert Frost's poetry, we can get a better understanding of the poet, his poetry and the people of his times.
