ABSTRACT:Hester, the heroine of The Scarlet Letter, created by Hawthorne, has been discussed by many scholars in many different aspects. This paper attempts to analyze Hester from the perspective of humanity on the basis of the ideas of dialectics to explore Hester’s complicated humanity. It aims to give a vivid picture of Hester after thoroughly understanding the contradiction of Hester’s thoughts and analyzing the inconsistency of her action. Hester, as a common person, she also has the qualities that shared by all human beings. Thus, Hester has strong points and shortcomings. On one hand, she has desires by instinct so that she rebelled against the puritan government for pursuing true love. In the process of rebelling she showed many good traits, such as her courage, her strong rebellious spirit and her strong independent capability. On the other hand, she was influenced by Puritanism deeply. During seven years her action displayed many weaknesses, for instance, her fragility, her compromise, the worst is that she can’t get out of the Puritanism’s chain completely. Hester’s inconsistent action proved that humanity is so complicated.

摘  要:霍桑《红字》中的女主人公——海丝特是人们争论的焦点，许多学者已经从很多方面对她进行了分析。 本文将基于辩证法观点从人性的角度来分析海斯特的人性。同时通过对海丝特矛盾心理的理解和对她自相矛盾的行为的分析来更深入的了解海丝特。作为一个人，海丝特拥有人类所拥有的所有特质。既然是人就有优点和缺点，海丝特也不例外。一方面海丝特为了追求真爱与清教政府对抗，在这一过程当中她表现出了许多优点，比如她的勇气，她强烈的反抗精神和很强的自立能力。另一方面她受清教影响很深，在七年反抗生活中她始终无法摆脱清教的束缚，同时也表现出了许多缺点。例如她的脆弱性，她的妥协性等。总之，海丝特自相矛盾的行为和心理显示出了人性是如此的复杂。
