Abstract:With the rapid development of the information technology and the close communication in all countries, cultural factors in English-Chinese translation have spontaneously appeared in recent years. Translation, especially the English-Chinese translation is not only a linguistic transference, but also an intercultural communication. For quite a long time, translation studies have been concentrated on the prescription translation methods, with scant attention paid to the description of cultural factors involved in the translating. In this paper, the writer contends that the study of the cultural factors will surely enlarge the scope and enrich the content of the translation studies. The paper is largely a rudimentary step, both in theory and in practice, to conclude the treatments of cultural factors in English-Chinese translation and analyze the cultural factors on English-Chinese translation. It summarizes the variances of values, thinking conversion, acceptations, cultural intentions and Chinese-western geographic politics, thus provides the cultural factors affecting English-Chinese translation. This paper also provides important consideration during English-Chinese translation, and develops the principle of dealing with cultural factors which is "to reserve differences while seeking common ground" rather than "to discard differences while seeking common ground". Key words: cultural factors, English-Chinese translation, treatments, reserve differences while seeking common ground
