Abstract:The differences exist in English and Chinese conjunctions, which affect the use of conjunctions in translating. They have many points in common, but English conjunctions and their usages are more than Chinese. English structure is on the basis of hypostasis, but Chinese is based on parataxis. The order of Chinese sentence is followed by the time and logic that need not so many conjunctions to show the relations between each other. So the conjunctions are often omitted when English is translated into Chinese. Conjunctions can be divided into two kinds: coordinative conjunction and subordinate conjunction. The coordinative conjunction links up the words, phrases, sentences that are coordinative relationship. The subordinate conjunctions connect the sentences and Chinese clauses. Generally, English conjunctions’ meaning is regular, whereas, “and” is very special; its meaning is irregular and mobile. It is said, in English, the originally appeared coordinative is “and”.The usage of “and” is wide-ranging and has many kinds of meaning. In the process of translating, the meaning of “and” must be translated from its context. In some grammar books, more than twenty ways are found. This paper sums up the methods of translating “and” into Chinese; the usages of “and” are more than thirty. Key words: conjunction;hypotaxis;pararaxis;translation
