Abstract:Thackeray is one of the greatest representatives of English critical realistic writers in the nineteenth century. Vanity Fair has been generally regarded as his masterpiece as well as a world classic. The success of Vanity Fair is mainly owing to the classic character Becky. She breaks the social convention that women win their love, marriage and position by their beauty and goodness. She subverts women’s stereotype image, dares to challenge the class society and the patriarchal society, pursues her value optimistically, and eventually fulfills the meaning of her life. She is considered as a pioneer of feminism.

The thesis interprets Vanity Fair from a feminist critical perspective. It consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces the author, the plot and theme of the novel, and makes a domestic literature review briefly. Chapter two reviews the origin and development of feminism. Chapter three analyzes Becky, a rebellious and brave female who dares to fight against the traditional concept. It mainly discusses from three aspects: how Becky fights against the social rank consciousness, how she challenges the marriage mode, and how she subverts the traditional family pattern. The last chapter is a summary of the whole thesis.
