Abstract:The American writer William Faulkner is regarded as a representative writer of the literacy of southern United States. Most of Faulkner’s works which can be seen as a historical play about the southern society that span nearly 300 years are set in the background of old transformed South in post-Civil War period. A Rose for Emily is one of Faulkner’s representative short stories. Miss Emily Grierson as the protagonist, was the descendant of a decaying aristocracy of the Old South and was respected and supported by the local residents. But her life was full of conflicts and contradictions. This paper will analyse the story of A Rose for Emily and at the same time the conflicts in the personality of both Emily and people in the South who lost their faith and spiritual support because of the American Civil War. This paper is launched describing from three aspects. The first one is people in Jefferson Town which are the representative of the people in the South and Miss Emily's contradictory attitute towards the traditions and old values; the second one is the residents and Miss Emily's contradictory responses towards the social changes; the last one focuses on the influence caused by Miss Emily's old noble identity. 摘要:美国小说家威廉福克纳是美国南方文学的代表作家,他的大多数作品都是以南北战争后处于变革时期的旧南方为背景,生动地演绎了一部跨越了近300年的南方社会的历史剧。 《献给艾米丽的一朵玫瑰花》是福克纳短篇小说的代表作。主人公艾米丽格里尔逊小姐虽然是一位备受当地民众爱戴的旧南方没落贵族的后裔,却命运多舛,一生中充满矛盾与冲突。本文旨在通过对《献给艾米丽的一朵玫瑰花》中事件的分析,解读并揭示小说主人公艾米丽以及美国内战后失去信念与精神支柱的南方人性格中的冲突以及对于旧日与新生活的矛盾心理。 本文将通过三方面展开论述。第一方面是杰弗逊镇居民(南方人的代表)以及没落贵族艾米丽对待传统与旧价值观既依赖又抗拒的矛盾态度;第二方面是小镇居民与艾米丽对社会变化所采取的矛盾的应对方式;最后一个方面着重论述了艾米丽的旧贵族身份对她产生的影响。 关键词:艾米丽;冲突;旧南方 |
