Abstract:American Dream- a well-known dream all over the world, which originated in the period of immigration, after years of baptism, from flourishing to disillusion. However, the influence in American society is irreplaceable. Even at the moment, American Dream is still the guiding spirit for many Americans. All in all, American Dream is the unique phenomenon in American, the history of American is the history of American Dream.

Francis Scott Fitzgerald, one of the most important writers in 1920s, he is regarded as the spokesman of the“Jazz Age”. The Great Gatsby is Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, it reveals the tragedy of American Dream through the death of the protagonist-Gatsby. American Dream describes an attitude of hope and faith that looks forward to the fulfillment of human wishes and desires. American Dream is not only a simple dream but also the symbol of American culture.

This article is based on the analysis of The Great Gatsby to get the underlying causes of American Dream’s disillusion.

摘要:美国梦，一个响彻世界的梦，它起源于移民时代，历经岁月的洗礼，从兴盛走向灭亡，对美国社会有着无可替代的影响。即使在当下，美国梦依旧是众多美国人的精神导向。总而言之，美国梦是美国的特有现象，一部美国历史就是一部美国梦的历史。

F.S 菲茨杰拉德，19世纪20年代具有影响力的作家，被誉为“爵士时代”的代言人，《了不起的盖茨比》是菲茨杰拉德的代表作，作者通过小说主人公盖茨比的死亡揭示美国梦破灭的悲剧。美国梦不仅仅是一个梦，更是美国文化的符号，它赋予了这个梦一种积极向上的态度，是人们对未来生活的希望和愿景。

本文通过对菲茨杰拉德的代表作《了不起的盖茨比》的解读，分析美国梦破灭的深层原因。
