Abstract: With the development of economy and technology, public transportations are developing at fast speed. In Chinese metropolises, the metro has gradually become one of the most convenient public transportation means. As globalization deepens, it is necessary to attach more importance to metro station translation for more and more foreigners are making use of it as well. Metro station translation should abide by the regulation of public-transportation translation and reflect local characteristics in history and culture. Current translations of metro stations usually employ three methods, namely, the Chinese alphabet method, the semantic transliteration method and the free translation method. This thesis focuses on the translations of Nanjing metro stations and compares them with those of other cities, all of which adopt the three common translation methods. On that basis, this study aims to point out some inappropriate translations of some metro stations and propose a few possible strategies, in order that the tentative modifications may provide some stimulation for better regulation on the translation of metro stations. Key Words: metro station translation; Nanjing; strategies
