Abstract:Angel Clare is one of the characters created by Thomas Hardy. He is Tess’s husband. He loves Tess, ironically, his affection is one of the reasons cause Tess’s misery. He has both bright side and dark side. 

　　　According to the researches about Angel Clare, scholars found out that Angel was a representative of the hypocrisy of religion. In Victorian Era, people believed the justice brought by Bible and obeyed the doctrines in Bible. Bible reveals the injustice of daily life and shows the truth of the women oppressed by patriarchal ideology. Tess’s tragedy is a portray of contemporary ethos. Hardy not only shows his anger of Christian, but also shows his disaffection to the patriarchal ideology.

　　　This essay is discussing on the Theory of Social Sex, i.e behavioral sex differences are resulted from the differential social roles inhabited by women and men, which is especially concerning the division of labor. (Eagly, Wood, and Diekman, 2000: 123-174) 

　　　This essay provides a detailed analysis about Angel Clare, reveals the patriarchal ideology in Angel’s mind and studies Angel’s role in Tess’s tragedy.

中文摘要:安吉尔·克莱是托马斯·.哈代笔下众多男性角色中的其中一个，他是苔丝的丈夫，他虽然深爱着苔丝，却也是将苔丝推入深渊的一个原因。在他身上看到了光辉却也看到了软弱的阴暗面。

　　　根据众多学者研究得出，安吉尔象征着基督教的伪善，而对于之前学者的研究本人还认为圣经带有浓厚的父权思想色彩，圣经被奉为当时的规章制度，其中显示了当时女性受父权思想压迫的真实状况，苔丝的悲剧正是当时父权思想下的产物。苔私的悲剧不但是哈代对宗教的控诉，更是对当时父权思想的不满。

　　　本文指出男女不平等的根本原因不是由两性之间的生理差异决定的,而是由两性的社会性别差异造成的，根源在于男性中心主义的父权思想。本文对安吉尔的人物性格进行举例分析，分析他对苔丝悲剧命运的影响。
