Abstract: Beloved, Toni Morrison’s most important and impressive novel, is inspired by the true story of a black American woman slave, Margaret Garner. This paper, by analyzing the black women’s status as slave and free, aims to study the establishment of black women’s subjectivity in Beloved. It holds that though physically liberated after the American Civil War, the blacks had to go a long way to spiritual freedom and self-identification. Individual effort is necessary for black women to gain subjectivity. But mutual help from the black community and preservation of traditional cultures are also indispensable in the course of seeking self-identity. Key word: Beloved, self-identity, subjectivity
