Abstract:In the early 1920s, Hemingway began to achieve fame by describing a generation of youth whom Stein memorably dubbed the “Lost Generation”. His novels The Sun Also Rises(1926), and A Farewell to Arms(1929) established him as a dominant literary figure of his time. Then, he published For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). These works are well known in the world with the images of tough man and Hemingway’s simple and concise writing style also has great influence in the field of the American literature.

“A Clean Well-Lighted Place” was written in 1933 which is one of Hemingway’s representative stories. After its publication, it soon aroused widespread concern and response in countries around the world, and made a lot of experts and scholars start to research it. This story mainly focused on the spiritual breakup.

On the basis of previous research and Iceberg Theory, this thesis aims to probe into the social mental situation through the simple words used in the story in depicting the three characters.
