Abstract:Journalistic English serves a way to widen people’s knowledge of the whole international society and plays a very important part in our public affairs, and in people’s working as well as daily life. News headline is a quite essential part in news reporting. Therefore we should pay special attention to the translation of news headline.

To attract readers’ attention, many rhetorical methods are widely used in news headlines. Due to the huge cultural differences between English and Chinese, the usage of rhetorical methods often becomes a big barrier in the correct comprehension of English news report.

This thesis, beginning with introducing the definition and function of English sports news headline, intends to analyze and discuss the usage of metonymy in English sports news headline, and proposes several practical translation tactics: literal translation, free translation and addition to help the readers well understand news headline and the unique rhetorical effects of metonymy.
