Abstract:With the fast spread of internet technologies, more and more Chinese people have opportunities to enjoy latest western audiovisual materials on the internet and meanwhile subtitle translation groups emerge as unique groups of people who voluntarily produce Chinese subtitles for foreign TV series and movies, and then they make use of the internet to share these subtitles free. Therefore, subtitles produced by them are also called subtitle translation group translations. Because of subtitle translation groups’ unique development history, dissemination methods and present make–up, their translations become apparently distinct from Chinese official translations of movies. This paper is devoted to the comparison of official subtitle translation of movies and subtitle translation groups’ version. It aims to summarize features and trends of subtitle translation groups’ work, based on three different movies Kung Fu Panda,Pride & Prejudice and Forrest Gump. Each of the three movies’ translations would be analyzed from various lights, such as colloquial style and amplification. Compared with translations of classical literature, audiovisual translation has its own feature. Therefore, hopefully, this study of the audiovisual translation may be of some value to the movies’ translation practice as well as translation theory in general. Key words: subtitle translation; subtitle translation group; film; comparison
This paper is devoted to a discussion of the differences between movies’ official subtitle translation and translation groups’ version, based on three different movies. As above, these three movies’ translations have been analyzed from various perspectives, such as colloquial style and amplification, which are very essential for each movie’s successful translation. In general, according to the above analyses, the present writer would like to say, the official version is not always better than the grass-roots one, contrary to many people belief. In these three movies, the official translation also makes many low-level mistakes, like mistaking the phrase “be slave to” in the second film Pride and Prejudice. Admittedly, fansub group is by no means perfect, but it is not as disappointing as some people think. Besides, there exist many fansub groups’ translation versions for a movie, with both terrible and excellent ones. Therefore, when talking about a specific film, one is supposed to compare different translations carefully and thoroughly to decide which one is better. Secondly, the writer finds out that it is not easy to summarize the so-called general features of fansub groups’ translation and of official translation. What decides each movie’s translation style mostly is actually each translator’s style and it is very hard to make generalizations according to various styles of translators who belong to the two different groups. So it is naïve to assert that fansub groups’ version is absolutely colloquial-style or more free-translation, compared with its official counterpart. Translators from both official groups and fansub groups could decide whether this sentence uses free translation or literal translation, according to many specific elements such as genre, occasion and character.
