Abstract:English Euphemism is the universal existence in human language with a strong national culture identity; English euphemism is also an indirect language expression form and an important method to help people establish harmonious relationship and ensure smooth process of communication. A further study of the pragmatic functions of English euphemism in the communication and social applications does help to make people have a better understanding of  thinking, social value ethics and cultural style about the people from English-speaking countries and to improve people’s communication skills.

　　　This paper will discuss the definition, origin, classification, composition and development of English euphemism, and focus on the study of pragmatic functions of English euphemism in daily life. It also reveals the various kinds of functions to the society. The communication function, the amusement function and the innovation function are the typical functions of English euphemism. They work together and have a widespread application in our daily life.   English euphemism involves in every field of our daily life, so a further and complete study can bring about incredible results to all of us. Through the study, we people can learn more communication skills and improve our way of dealing with the public relations；we can also avoid the conflict and misunderstanding of negotiation. It’s a good way to make the society develop peacefully and make people live harmoniously.

中文摘要:英语委婉语是人类语言中的一种普遍现象，带有极强的民族文化特征，是一种间接的语言表达形式，是建立良好的人际关系，确保语言交际顺利进行的重要语言手段。对英语委婉语在日常交际中的语用功能和社会应用的进一步探讨，有助于我们更加深入地了解英语国家人们的思维方式、社会价值观、道德观以及文化风格，对于提高我们自身的语言交际能力是十分必要的。

　　　本文将在讨论委婉语的定义、来源、分类、构成、发展后，重点分析英语委婉语在日常生活中的应用，揭示英语委婉语的各种语用功能及其在日常生活中所起的重大作用等问题。英语委婉语的沟通功能、娱乐功能和创新功能相互作用，并在我们日常生活中广泛的应用。日常生活中交际、娱乐、创造都涉及到英语委婉语，对英语委婉语的学习和研究将会给我们每个人带来意想不到的效果。通过对日常生活中英语委婉语语用功能的研究，我们可以从中学会良好的处事方式和沟通技巧，消除交际过程中的冲突和摩擦，促进人与人、人与社会之间的和谐发展，增进人与人之间的友好关系。
