Abstract: Eugene O’Neill（1888-1953）is an American dramatist. His plays have reflected the charm of traditional tragedy is with sincere and deep passion, and has won him a world-wide reputation. He is the first American playwright to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Long Day's Journey into Night, with the theme of family life, describes the story of an Irish family of which the members are always quarrelling with each other, and always feel contrite after that. The thesis will explore tragedy roots and mysterious elements of the play from the writing background, technique expression and artistic value.
