ABSTRACT：This thesis is the discussion of the rebellious character of Holden Caulfield, a protagonist in novel The Catcher in the Rye. The novel tells the story of a seventeen-year-old teenager who was forced to leave school because he failed his courses. He wandered around in New York City for three days. Holden demonstrated a rebellious character in the novel. He opposed to the then Utilitarian Education, his indifferent family, and the conventional life style of the American people. The reasons for his rebellion were various. They include psychological reason, family reason and social reason. To a large degree, Holden’s rebellion reflected his vision for a good society. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the American social realities in the early of the twentieth century and to discuss the influence of society on the youth.
