He not only was fluent in Japanese but also knew Japanese society very well. He became acquainted with many Japanese and was deeply influenced by Japanese military ideas. As one of the senior members of the United League of China, during his stay in Japan, Lan contributed enormously to fomenting the revolution. Although he had many Japanese friends, he raged about Japan＇s violation of China＇s sovereignty and had strong sentiment against Japan. During the Revolution of 1911, he was held back by the Japanese government but at the same time received support from some Japanese friends.
