Arab Women have stood hand in hand with men at the forefront of the Arab Spring in an effort to overthrow repressive old orders. Now, they demand the greater rights for themselves. 外语论文网 www.waiyulw.com Lebanese activaist Diala Haidar and four other women rights activists across the Middle East used Facebook to start a movement of “The Uprising of Women in the Arab World” in October 2017 to demand equality, freedom and dignity. "The Arab Spring took place under the banner of freedom, dignity and equality, and the three can't be established if women are left behind," said Haidar. "At every stage of history we have been given the excuse, 'It's not the time to discuss women's issues -- we are at war, it's a revolution,' or whatever. It's our time to say 'We need our rights,'" she added. Two campaigns are currently running in their website: 1. Photo Campaign asks people to submit photos with a message of their support of this campaign. 2. Tell Your Story Campaign encourages women to share their stories of violence, abuse and harassment, in an effort to make the world listen. "The revolution won't take place in secrecy, it will take place in the light," said Haidar. "We have to start sharing our stories and concerns and aspirations publicly. It can prove that these incidents ... are not exceptional cases but part of a whole society that we should work to cure from this violence." So far, dozens of women have submitted the photo and shared their stories. Haidar says the campaign is trying to challenge the traditional culture of “honors” in the Arab world, which often punish the victims of sexual crimes. "We have to get rid of the blame that society inflicts upon us when it comes to issues of sexual harassment, rape and domestic violence," she added. The campaign is also targeting other issues across the region, including the persistence of patriarchal personal status laws, honor killings, female genital mutilation and forced marriages. However, in the post- revolutionary Egypt, a rise of sexual violence against women can be seen, and the sharia-based draft constitution may not protect women’s equality. Does the Arab Spring fail women? According to Haidar,阿拉伯语专业论文, it is still "too early" to say that the Arab Spring has failed women and that could only happen if women allowed it. "They can't betray women as long as we stand up for our rights and take advantage of this moment in history," she said. "If we consent to this, it will happen, but if we don't, it will never happen." |
