Abstract: Thomas Hardy is not only adept in describing nature and portraying characters with different colors but also good at combining them organically with the plot, which shows his unique artistic style and skill. This unique writing style is manifested in the author’s use of red. Through the analysis of the role of metaphor of red in Tess of the D’Urbervilles, this paper points out that: the metaphorical sense of color is an important tool in portraying works and stressing hero’s tragic fate.

摘要：哈代善于用不同色彩描绘自然、刻画人物并使之与故事情节有机结合,显示出其独特的艺术风格和技巧。在《德伯家的苔丝》中，这一独特的创作手法集中表现在作者对于红色意象的运用中。本文对《德伯家的苔丝》中红色的隐喻作用进行分析,以证明颜色的隐喻象征意义是刻画作品和突出主人公的悲惨命运的重要工具。
