This paper intends to focus on transformational-generative grammar, which is one of the main branches in western linguistics. Linguists, such as Inoue Kazuko, Okutu Keiichirou, Kuno Susumu, Kuroda Shigeyuki, Shibatani Masayoshi and Teramura Hideo apply the theory of generative grammar to analyze linguistic data in Japanese in great detail, which has solved a great deal of practical issues. This shows that Japanese grammar is on the way to becoming more mature and diversified. This paper, combined with the development of Japanese linguistics, puts emphasis on the five stages of transformational-generative grammar mentioned by Chomsky.
