In Chinese culture, red is a festive color, which is often used as the symbol of happiness and thus is usually associated with good luck and auspiciousness. Although red is also one of Japanese favorite colors, its festive and auspicious meaning is much less compared with Chinese. Instead, white has always been an auspicious color in Japan for much of its history. Red and white are often opposite in Chiness culture, while they are often united in Japanese culture, representing festival meaning.
