Long-Cherished Dream Comes True By He Qingsheng When we were young, we dreamed of visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg, for we were reading so much about Soviet heroes and their brave deeds. But one decade after another passed and the dream was still a dream. It was not until this year that 25 of us, descendents of Chinese revolutionary martyrs, got a chance to visit Russia. We were part of a Chinese singing group for a cruise on the Volga River. The ten-day journey started on August 7, 2017. Our first stop was St. Petersburg. We knew the historical city was home to Russia’s poets, writers and composers such as Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky and we knew the city was grand. But when we were actually there, we wowed at the grandeur of the city’s architecture. The city has over 50 museums with a huge aggregate collection of arts and crafts. We also visited the famous Battleship Aurora where the first shots of the 1917 revolution were fired. We took photos. After the exciting visit to St. Petersburg, our long memorable journey on Neva River down to Moscow began. The days and nights on the river were exciting and happy. There were exhilarating shipboard activities. We heard the Song of Volga Boatmen.Whenever one of us had birthday, the Russian youths on the cruise would come to us, singing with accompaniment of an accordion, holding balloons and a birthday cake. When we chanted Tibetan songs in the evening, the Chinese students in Russia and Russian girls would dance to our tune. We reached Moscow. When we finally stood on the Red Square hand in hand, we wept. Our long-cherished feeling that the Russian people were heroes was so true and firm when we were there. They fought the fascists and showed the whole world what Russians are. We mourned silently in front of Lenin’s mausoleum, recalling Lenin’s words: “Forgetting the past means betrayal”。 Before we left Moscow, we visited Novodevichy Cemetery. As soon as we stepped into to the cemetery, we felt as if we were seeing the heroes?familiar faces in our dreams decades ago. We took group photos in front of a tomb for Soviet martyrs who died in World War II. Saying goodbye was emotional. The cruise trip was not just travel. It was also saying goodbye on various occasions. We pinned memorial buttons with the Chinese national emblem to the chests of cruise crew, guides in Summer Palace, Winter Palace and Kremlin, and construction workers. We shook hands with them. Now we are dreaming of a revisit to the great country in the north. (Translated by David) |
