The large pile of fabricated translation textbooks are not fit for the translation teaching of different languages too. For a translation teacher, the most important job is to know clearly his students' difficulties in translation learning and accordingly equip them with the competence in language use. In Thai translation teaching it is often found that students' major problem with translation lies in their inability to fully understand the word meaning, sentence structure and forms of expression of the Thai language. The present paper begins by briefly presenting the author's personal understanding of translation. Then, a detailed analysis is made of typical mistakes found in students' translation exercises, leading to a tentative conclusion that such mistakes can be attributed to a misunderstanding of the source language, lack of encyclopedic knowledge, and a poor mastery of the fixed expressions of both the source and target languages. |
