Researchers on Semantics, Pragmatics and Cognitive linguistics play a profound role in the development of modern Japanese linguistics. Significant achievements have been made on Japanese semantics by linguists Shiro Hattori and Taro Kageyama, on Japanese pragmatics by scholars like Asaba Ryoichi and Koizumi Tamotsu and on cognitive linguistics by researchers such as Masaak Yamanashi and Yeshihiko Ikegami. They not only introduce western linguistic theories into Japan, but also make suc- cessful research on similar phenomena in Japanese, showing the progress of Japanese grammar theory becoming mature and di- versified.
