When language attrition happens, vocabulary attrition is inevitable and the re-acquisition is necessary to maintain previous foreign language proficiency. This study aims at investigating the state of Japanese vocabulary attrition for English Major post students whose second language is Japanese after finishing the course for 10 months. The result shows that their degree of Japanese vocabulary attrition is quite high. In particular, this study analyzes the influence of linguistic elements on the vocabulary attrition. We can see that the part of speech, word length and word origin of Japanese vocabulary can hinder students from maintaining their language proficiency. More specifically, adjective, Chinese words and some words that are short can be acquired more easily. In the contrary.
