Ellipsis is a language phenomenon that exists in any kind of language. However,the ellipsis phenomenon is particularly prominent in Japanese,and it is called as one of the three major characteristics by Japanese classical grammar O. Matsuo. In this paper,the characteristics of ellipsis expression in Japanese were summarized firstly. Then,the ellipsis expressions were classified. Next,through examples,the characteristics and usage patterns of various kinds of ellipsis expressions were analyzed. Finally,an in-depth analysis on ellipsis expression is conducted. Based on ellipsis expressions,the paper observes the ambiguous nature of the Japanese people,emphasis on interpersonal relations,the sense of closure and the sense of shame.
