As a kind of cognitive structure, an image schema reflects the human conceptualization of the relationship between all kinds of things. The Taiji schema is based on the basic linguistic figure-ground schema and the principle of Aotu transfer. It originates from the Taiji image, which is a reflection of ancient Chinese wisdom and the symbol of Chinese traditional culture. In the Taiji schema, the black is usually recognized as the figure, which then gains cognitive prominence and becomes the focus of attention. If attention is focused on the white, the white becomes the figure and the black the background. We usually use the Taiji schema, but not Robin's vase or Aotu schema, to explain the phenomenon of one form representing two contrasting events. The reason is, in Rubin's vase or Aotu schema, the figure and the background are of different shapes, which forces us to use different or even contrasting expressions to denote the configuration instead of just one. In contrast, in the Taiji schema the figure and the background are in opposite directions while having the same shape, which makes it possible to use the same expression to denote the configuration. Some linguistic phenomena in Japanese could be better explained if the Taiji schema is taken into consideration.
