Zhao Yao,school of art and design,Nan Yang Normal University He Nan. R.P.C. IntroductionThe application of colour is not as simple as we normally think.  Decoration, painting or drawing are the first few concepts come to our mind as soon as we mention colour.  In fact colour also deeply influents people’s every day behaviour. An article points out that “colour does affect our actions and reactions in traffic as well as in interior environments. Colour can create conditions that can cause fatigue, increase stress, decrease visual perception, damage eyesight, increase possible worker errors, and negatively affect orientation and safety.” 1 Key words:   Colour,  Interior,   Environment,   LightingThe Definition of ColourWhat is colour? We even do not think about this kind of simple question until someone else asks you to give a specific definition. For the basic understanding according to my general knowledge, I think colour can be anything. It can be a type of music to stands for sound, because every single hue is just like different tone and represents various melodies. It can be the normal lights give us illumination at night or the sun light during the day time. The reason being is that because without lights colour will not be able to make any sense to human, it is invisible for us. In addition, colour can also be used for communication, by reason of practicability of colour. There are two more powerful explanations. One says “Colour is a sensation which (in humans) derives from the ability of the fine structure of the eye to distinguish three differently filtered analyses of a view.” 2 The other one shows that “Colour in the environment is characterized by brightness and hue, colour is a general term that includes both brightness and hue, although it is popularly thought of us meaning hue.” 3 Colour in Interior EnvironmentWe have to be aware of the impact of the visual environment and we must take it seriously on colour application so as to create a satisfying colour for eyes, mind and mood in interiors where we enjoy the most of time in our life. Consequently, the prerequisite step is to understand colour and design with colour and to study what the basic attributes are, also how they can be used to achieve significant and effective result in interior environments. Human have the sense of colour temperature. Generally, the contrast is between warm and cool colours. “The warm colours are yellow, red, magenta, and brown; the cool ones are violet, blue, green, and grey.” 4 In Interior Design, to my point of view, especially for home design, light warm colours prone to be used more than cool colours. Clients are more likely require for bright warm colours rather than cool and dark ones. Because bright and warm colours can increase the cozy atmosphere for the living areas. The other reason for people choosing light warm colour for interior is because it can visually enlarge the space for your room and also create a clean pleasant environment. Light colour tend to make an area seem more spacious while dark colour have the reverse effect “ If a dark or boldly patterned wall stands between two light ones, it will seem quite free in space, but if all four walls are dark, or if all are patterned, the room will seem small (Mock,1904) ” 5Bathroom is a special area, which should be highlighted when you apply colours in Interior Design because of the function and the size. Usually we choose white or very light colour for this area, it gives people a sense of cleanliness, space and freshness. “If you have a small bathroom choosing a white bathroom suite together with very light coloured ceramic wall tiles or bathroom cladding will result in the room feeling larger than would be the case with more definite colours.” 6                                         Relations
