Abstract
"News language must be accurate", this is the most important principle of the news reports, but it does not mean that only precise language can be used. In news reports, the vague language is an objective existence and it is also indispensable. The proper use of vague language in news reports can increase news accuracy. This paper aims at analyzing the definition, characteristics, and related researches of vague language to find out the cause of the existence of vague language in news reports and its performance, and then pay more attention to the function of vague language in news reports. The study finds that the vagueness of the thing itself, the language itself and the people’s cognitive thinking are three reasons for the existence of vague language in news. Vague language is reflected in news as vague words and vague sentences. The study also shows that there are four main functions of vague language in news reports: (1) Increase the accuracy of news reports. (2) Enhance the flexibility of news reports. (3) Make the reports more objective. (4) Meet the readers’ cognitive habits.

1 Introduction
Language users always like to use clear and precise language to express their purposes of communication. Although vague language is not recognized by them, in real life, the use of vague language is everywhere. In fact, ambiguity is an important characteristic of all natural languages, and vague language is an objective existence, therefore in the process of verbal communication, people not only need precise language but also need vague language. Sometimes only vague language can achieve the purpose of communication and meet the needs of communication without affecting the communicative effects. As early as 1965, "fuzzy sets" was published by the United States cybernetics expert L.A. Zadeh. This thesis pointed out: Objects encountered in the real physical world, often do not have precisely defined boundaries, can be called "fuzzy sets"(Zadeh, 1965). Vague language plays an important role in people’s abstract thinking and the transmission of information, and also shows ambiguity of human cognitive ability. The use of language is a way to show our understanding of the real world and our abstract thinking, which makes language take on a fuzzy nature.
