1.1 General Survey
In 1955 Edward T Hall wrote The Anthropology of Manners, in which he came up with a manner: cross-culture, as a first person. In 1959, the silent language, as the first cross-cultural published book, marked the cross-culture stepping into the academic field. During 1960s, University of Pittsburgh, University of Michigan and some other American universities offered a series of cross-cultural courses. At the end of 1970s, cross-culture became an independent subject. Until 1979, almost each American university offered a course of cross-culture. And at the beginning of 1980s, cross-culture, as a study, was spread into China. Scholars universally acknowledged that Culturally Loaded Words and English Language Teaching (written by Xu Guozhang, 1980) marked the birth of cross-culture in China.
