Analysis of Characters' Utterances from the Perspective of Politeness Principle
— Based on Pride and Prejudice
Abstract
Pride and Prejudice is a famous British novelist Jane Austen’s classic masterpiece in 19th century. This novel mainly tells the story about two lovers, one is pride and the other has prejudice on her lover. It widely reflects British country life and the events. This paper utilize Leech’s Politeness Principle illustrate the characters’ utterances in the novel. According to the observation and violation of Politeness Principle and the different effects of the two aspects, I will show readers the importance of observing Politeness Principle in daily communication. Readers can get a deeper understanding of western culture in practice.
