Abstract
An increasing number of producers, screenwriters and directors turn their attention to film adaptation. In the middle of twentieth century, American writer Elwyn Brooks White published his first children’s book: Stuart Little. As one of White’s most popular work, the book has been adapted for 3 films and an animation in the recent 20 years.
This thesis employs film adaptation theory as theoretical foundation and content analysis as the approach to compare the text and the films. Through analyzing the story redeployment between the text and the films, it focuses on studying the economic purposes and social purposes behind the adaptation. It first gives a brief introduction of the film adaptation theory; then it explores the theme that White intended to send in his original work. After the theme analysis, it explains the differences in details between the book and the 1999 film Stuart Little, 2017 film Stuart Little 2 respectively. After that, during the explanation, it analyzes the purposes of every adaptation classified by economic purpose, social purpose. Based on the analysis of the two films, it then studies the film adaptation theories of the film. In the end, it proposes that this kind of film adaptation should explore the equilibrium point of the commercialization and also respect the theme of the original work, though sometimes it should also comply with the present social spirit.
The result of this thesis will be a supplement to the literature on animation films adaptation and be able to provide some reference for the films like Stuart Little, which adapted from the children’s book and combines the animation technology as well as the live-action.
