Chapter One Introduction

1.1 The Background of the Research    
The  New  Curriculum  Standard(A  New  Round  of  Basic  Education  Curriculum  Reform,  2017)  states that  “the  tasks  of  English  Curriculum  in  elementary  education  stage  is  to  stimulate  and  develop  the students'  interest  of  learning  English;  to  enable  the  students  to  build  their  self-confidence  and  form  good learning habits as well as effective learning strategies; to develop their ability of autonomous learning and cooperation spirit; to cultivate students' observation, memory, thinking, imagination ability and innovation spirit”. However, the traditional teaching model in English classes of Junior middle schools can not fulfill these achievements. The reasons are as follows.From the point of the education objectives, the traditional English teaching classes focus on the scores and  selection  in  order  to  help  the  students  obtain  the  qualification  of  further  education,  which  is  a  short sighted  behavior.  The  traditional  teaching  model  can  not  meet  the  achievement  of  improving  people’s quality and the pursuit of education in the long-term interests.From  the  point  of  the  educational  subject,  the  traditional  English  classes  attach  great  importance  to the  high  score  students  and  ignore  the  majority  of  students,  which  is  contrary  to  the  purpose  of  the compulsory education, as it is not teaching for all students and can not enable everyone to develop.   Form the point of the teaching content, the traditional English classes center on the entrance exams. In  another  words,  it  is  one-sided  contend  of  knowledge  teaching,  ignoring  the  cultivation  of  the non-examination  oriented  abilities.  As  it  ignores  the  training  of  English  listening  and  speaking  skills, students can not give fully play to the communicative function of the language. From the point of the teaching method, the traditional teaching applies the rote learning and cramming teaching method, which not only increase the student’s study burden, but also fail to cultivate the students’ comprehensive and potential abilities.  From  the  point  of  the  teaching  results,  the  majority  of  the  students  are  ignored,  resulting  in  their emotional  weariness,  one-sided  development,  depressed  personality  and  lack  of  the  ability  of  continuing develop.
