Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Justification and Significance of the Research
As the second language, English has been taught since the early 20th century inmost of the schools in China, but affected by traditional learning, teaching systemsand patterns, which focused on vocabulary, grammar, translation exercise and textexplanation, the teachers and students, paid more attention to knowledge acquisitioninstead of competence of English application. For this reason, all-around educationalreform, in particular, reform of basic education, for English course is inevitable.But how to reform basic education to set up positive, suitable, harmoniousrelationship between teachers and students in Junior English Course and teaching;how to train students' self- learning ability ; how to gear to the need ofcommunicational tasks; how to enhance the efficiency of classroom teaching, theseare some of the problems we face in the Junior English teaching.The research, focusing on the application of classroom interaction, is expected toraise a practical suggestion to the English learning and teaching approach of KunshanCity, and to present the application of classroom interaction to Junior Englishlearning.

1.2 Research Context and Methodologies


1.2.1 Research context
The researcher made a random sampling and chose the two parallel classes inYushan Junior Middle School located in Kunshan City Jiangsu Province through thecomparative experiment based on psychology, pedagogy and linguistic theories.In the one- year experiment, by analyzing measurement of the collected databetween the experimental class and control class and observing the situation of thesubjects, the researcher wants to testify the efficient means to promote the classroominteraction whether performing Teacher Talk appropriately can enrich thecomprehensible input and applying efficient tasks in form of group work can givemore opportunities to interact between learners and interlocutors. Mixed method procedures which employ aspects of both quantitative methodsand qualitative procedures are adopted in this research.In the process of the experiment, the specific procedures for designing theresearch need researchers to identify samples from the range of the school withexperimental purpose; collect and analyze data through classroom observation basedon the COLT scheme and questionnaires.A COLT scheme is used in the process of experiment to describe the classactivities in a certain time and the feature of interactive communication in thediscourse between teachers to students or students to students. The data of the COLTscheme shows teacher talk, group works, and various tasks can prompt the applicationof classroom interaction.

2.1 The Definition of the Key Concepts of the Research
Put forward by Michael Long in early 1980s, the Interaction Hypothesis isadvanced as a further extension or supplement of the Input Hypothesis in the field ofsecond language acquisition.Ellis claimed,  When L2 learners face communicative problems and they havethe opportunity to negotiate solutions to them, they are able to acquire a newlanguage.‘ (1990) and  it consists of the discourse jointly constructed by the learnersand his interlocutors‘.
